Green Flag in Caerphilly

Four projects worked on by Groundwork Caerphilly in partnership with communities and organisations have recently been recognised by the prestigious Green Flag awards.

Green Flag Awards recognise and reward the best parks and public green spaces in the UK.

Waunfawr Park in Crosskeys benefitted from funding via ERDF funding, under Groundwork Carerphilly’s ‘Cross Keys and Pontywaun Regeneration Partnership’ programme, and work was undertaken by Groundwork’s On the Ground team, with large scale works being undertaken in partnership with Caerphilly County Borough Council. Capital works were undertaken in consultation with the local community, including a new cycle path, joining route 47 of the Sustrans network, re-landscaping and the installation of a forest school provision.

The Green Park Festival has been a long standing event, first put on by Groundwork Caerphilly and adopted in recent years by Caerphilly County Borough Council, providing opportunities to attract visitors from far and wide, and showcasing opportunities available within the borough, as well as providing a platform for local performers.

Groundwork’s Communities First and Cleaner Greener Communities Teams (working in partnership with BTCV and Keep Wales Tidy) have worked hard over a long period with the Tarragon project in Bargoed, turning a brownfield site into a substantial community allotment site, enabling local community members to grow their own fresh food.

The Roger Lewis Garden in Oakdale has also benefitted from Groundwork Caerphilly’s involvement over the years.

Wern Park in Nelson has benefitted from input from Groundwork Caerphilly’s Community Environment Network officer, working with the community and contributing to community tree-planting as well as activities from community landscaping projects to putting on cycling and bug hunt activities on site.

Katy Stevenson, Executive Director of Groundwork Caerphilly is very proud of the work done in partnership and by utilising various resources to enable real community benefit, she said “The Green Flag acknowledgement of the work we do in partnership is testament to this method of working – and recognises the commitment of our communities in their stewardship of our valuable green spaces."
