Pantside Community Skip Days

19/08/2011

On the 17, 18 and 19 October, Groundwork Caerphilly held three Community Skip Days throughout Pantside in conjunction with Communities First Partnerships.

Local residents were invited to bring rubbish to one of a number of skips placed across the estate. The events were organised in response to the community’s request to clean up Pantside and improve the local natural environment.

Leaflets were distributed beforehand inviting 1,500 residents to get rid of unwanted domestic waste, which, they could not put out for the weekly refuse collection. Over 12 tonnes of rubbish were collected during the three days with over 50 households taking part. Residents were only able to shift such a large amount of waste due to the valuable support of the Community Payback team who were on hand to help on two of the days.

Swapshops were also held on each of the days. Residents were encouraged to bring any unwanted toys, clothes and bric-a-brac to swap with their neighbours. These were also really successful with everything from bikes to playstations being exchanged and three big bags of items were donated at the end of the event to Tŷ Hafan.

A number of items were also rescued from the skips and donated to the Community Furniture Enterprise in Rhymney, including a fabulous fire surround and a Welsh dresser.

Groundwork Caerphilly and the Communities First Team would like to thank the residents of Pantside and all those involved in organising the event for making it such a huge success.
