Mentro Allan

Mentro Allan explored ways in which use of the outdoor environment helped address health inequalities for disadvantaged groups, engaging with them and aiding them in improving their health and wellbeing. The programme unlocked the potential of the natural outdoor environment close to where people live to support increased physical activity opportunities for those who are generally less active than the wider population. Mentro Allan was one of a number of Big Lottery funded programmes across Wales.

The programme covered the boroughs of Caerphilly and Torfaen and works with people on low incomes, older people, people with low level mental health issues and young people at risk of disengagement. It worked with these groups to identify and overcome barriers to engagement and participation, to promote behavioural change resulting in participants leading a more active and healthy lifestyle.

The activities it supported were low to moderate intensity such as walking, cycling, gardening and environmental community action. The programme ensured that the activities are sustainable so that the participants are able to continue with them after the programme finished. To support this participants have been trained to become Ski Instructors, Archery Leaders, Healthy Walk Leaders, Nordic Walk Leaders and Instructors and competent Outdoor First Aiders.

This training established activities including an Archery group based in Ystrad Mynach, a community youth group working towards the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme, a weekly Nordic Walking group in Blackwood and Tai Chi/Qigong activities in Torfaen. In total the project registered over 400 participants, of which an average of 147 participants take part each quarter, with many taking part in one than one activity per week.
