Routes 2 Life

The Routes 2 Life programme provides horticultural and traditional countryside skills development opportunities for individuals and groups from the Rural Wards of Caerphilly County Borough. Based on 1.5 acres of land at Ynysddu, and a Carpentry workshop in Aberbargoed, it offers informal and formal training for individuals helping them to gain experience and skills, develop their employment prospects, self-esteem and general well being.

The programme also promotes the benefits of the natural environment and horticulture activities as a means of physical and mental recovery from a range of health problems.

In 2010/11 the programme provided opportunities to 156 young people and 50 children, 18 formal training courses were held with 21 individuals gaining a qualification and 37 individuals going on to utilise the skills gained. Volunteer placements have been sourced through a number of referral agencies including Job Centre Plus, GAVO, Shaw Trust and the Gwent Probation Service.

Training included Lantra qualifications in Drystone Walling, Hedge Laying, Brush Cutting, Woodland Management, Lime Plastering and Wood Chipping as well as the delivery of credit based learning opportunities such as Open College Network (OCN) accreditations along with informal training in Permaculture, Bushcraft and Green Wood Work.
