Who We Are

Groundwork Caerphilly was originally established as the Islwyn Groundwork Trust in September 1990, we subsequently extended our operation into the Rhymney Valley and renamed as Groundwork Caerphilly in 1996 when our area of operation became the whole of the County Borough. This includes areas such as Rhymney in the north, Nelson in the west, Newbridge and Risca in the east and Caerphilly in the south.

The County Borough features significant levels of deprivation, with nineteen wards and sub-wards qualifying under the Welsh Government’s Communities First initiative, the second highest number in Wales. We also cover Newport and Torfaen, counties in which we are developing our work.

Groundwork Caerphilly operates its base at the Mynyddislwyn Offices in Pontllanfraith, a grade II listed building that was the original Islwyn Borough Council Chambers. We also run our wholly owned subsidiary, GC Enterprises, a Community Furniture Enterprise, at the northern end of the Rhymney Valley.

The Trust runs a wide range of programmes including Community Environmental Network and Employability and Health Work. It is playing a key role in delivering Communities First across the County Borough of Caerphilly and is leading the Welsh Trusts on issues of waste minimisation and recycling through its pioneering work at the Community Furniture Enterprise.

A key player in local regeneration and sustainable development, Groundwork Caerphilly is working closely with its partners in the public, private and voluntary sectors to deliver local and regional strategies and contribute to the objectives of the Welsh Government.

Groundwork Caerphilly is part of Groundwork in Wales, a leading local, regional and national environmental regeneration network building sustainable communities across Wales.
