Libraries Fortnight
Welsh Libraries are urging everyone to race down to their library during the first two weeks of November. Libraries Fortnight comprises a programme of free events for all the family in libraries and local communities across the whole of Wales.
The theme linking all the events is the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad programme which inspires creativity across all forms of culture, especially among young people.
Events include family fun days, storytelling and animation workshops, open mike night, circus skills, author events, quizzes and competitions, rapping, craft events, zumba and street dance classes. Many of the events will be filmed and footage will be available for you to watch online.
Libraries Fortnight will be launched on 2nd November by Olympic Silver medallist Jamie Baulch and Paralympic thrower Nathan Stephens who is aiming for Gold in London 2012 at Cardiff Central Library.
Jamie commented, “It’s great to see libraries getting involved in celebrating London 2012 across Wales and everyone being inspired to organise so many different events for all ages and interests.
Nathan Stephens, IPC World Champion added: “I’m delighted to be supporting Libraries Fortnight and would urge everyone especially those that haven’t visited a library lately to see what’s available on their doorstep.”
Heritage Minister Huw Lewis said, “Libraries Fortnight is a great opportunity for the whole family to enjoy the benefits of their local library. Not only do they organise a diverse range of events all year round they also offer the latest bestsellers, free internet access, DVDs, and a great starting point if you are doing research of any kind whether it be for your studies or looking into your family tree.
Together with our programme of refurbishing and modernising libraries across Wales, celebrations like Libraries Fortnight are meeting our One Wales commitment to promote the public library network.”
