Children in Need success

Groundwork North Wales will be helping to change the lives and prospects of young care leavers, thanks to successfully securing funding of over £97,000 from Children in Need.

This 3 year project will give a brighter future to 60 young care leavers (aged 16-18) across Wrexham, Flintshire and Denbighshire who are not in employment, education or training.

The project will engage the young people in a 10 week volunteering programme where they will work on practical environmental improvements projects and gain formal qualifications.

Working in close partnership with Barnardo’s Cymru, the project will use the achievements gained through working on practical environmental activities as a catalyst for developing each person’s soft skills such as improving confidence, self esteem, working in a team and communication skills.

Each project will be chosen, designed, planned and delivered by the young people themselves. In addition each young person will be allocated a training budget to spend on gaining formal accreditation in an area of their choice.

With 1:1 and group support these young people will develop the interpersonal and employability skills necessary to begin their journey to sustaining permanent employment.

Karen Balmer, Executive Director of Groundwork North Wales said "Groundwork are delighted to have won the funding for this much needed project as 50 % of care leavers are likely to be unemployed or not in any training or education by their 19th birthday.

This project will make a real difference to the lives of young care leavers giving them the practical experience, training and skills to help them to gain employment and hope for the future.”

Yvonne Rodgers, Director of Barnardo’s Cymru added “Now more than ever is the right time for us to invest in young people. Unemployment must be tackled from the root - which means rescuing young people earlier on from the unrelenting grip of long term unemployment and the benefits trap.

We know that with the right support, most young people are willing and able to learn and work. This exciting project will help them make sure they have every chance to succeed.”
