Volunteers at the Felin Fach Garden Project

Groundwork North Wales is helping to make a community garden accessible for people with physical disabilities. Groundwork has recently begun working in partnership with the Felin Fach Garden Project in Botwnnog, Gwynedd, and thanks to a grant from the Communities First Trust Fund, the allotments will be developed so that they can be used by a much wider group of people.

The Felin Fach project is a therapeutic gardening scheme for people who are experiencing or recovering from the effects of mental illness, alcohol and substance misuse, or who are feeling isolated in their community. The project provides opportunities for people to learn new skills, to enjoy the natural environment, to work together and to nurture mental and physical health and wellbeing.

Groundwork North Wales are working side by side with volunteers to build wheelchair accessible raised beds, develop a network of accessible paths and a communal relaxation area. In the process volunteers will have the opportunity to develop new skills and demonstrate how more can be done with less.

The Felin Fach group also run a drop in centre in Pwllheli where people receive advice and guidance. Centre manager Christine Hughes noted, ‘we welcome this opportunity to work with Groundwork North Wales as it gives our service users and volunteers a chance to gain practical and transferrable skills, as well as experiencing the job satisfaction of working together as a team to create a sustainable project that will hopefully continue for years to come’.
